Shipping & Receiving Clerk

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

  • Daily punctuality and attendance are critical as other customers rely on Shipping to get finished products to their location in a timely manner.   

  • Must be able to work consistently in a safe and efficient manner

  • Compares identifying information and counts, weighs, or measures items of incoming and outgoing shipments to verify information against bills of lading, invoices, PO's, or other records.

  • Unpacks and examines incoming shipments, rejects damaged items, records shortages, and corresponds with shipper to rectify damages and shortages

  • Routes items to departments or personnel awaiting delivery of urgent items like parts, etc.

  • Operates tier lift truck or uses hand truck to move, convey, or hoist shipments from shipping and receiving platform to storage or work area.

  • Responsible for receiving damaged, defective or returned goods to NECO. Receives returned items from both shipping & receiving areas. Inspects items (or contacts appropriate department supervisor to perform visual and/or functionality check of item(s) to determine if it can be returned to inventory. Ensures proper documentation is processed through manufacturing support contact and forwards documentation to Accounting Dept. for customer credit processing.

  • Determines best method of shipment based on size, quantity destination point, urgency of shipment and cost.

  • Affixes shipping labels on packed cartons or stencils identifying shipping information on cartons.

  • Assembles wooden or cardboard containers or selects preassembled containers. Inserts  items into containers. Overseas shipment must meet International container guidelines standards: (e.g. no fiber board, plywood used)

  • Nails covers on wooden crates and binds containers with metal tape.

  • Stamps, stencils, or glues identifying information and shipping instructions onto crates or containers. Posts weights and shipping charges, and affixes postage.
  • Examines outgoing shipments to ensure shipments meet specifications. Maintains inventory of shipping  materials and supplies.
  • Maintains organization and housekeeping of area for efficient daily operation, safety 1st and to expedite routing and pulling of products from storage.

Education and/or Experience   

One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Mathematical Skills  

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.                                                  

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Dynamics Ax-2012 ERP software—may learn on the job.                                                  

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations  Must have current approved OSHA Forklift Certification for operator use and forklift safety guidelines.

Other Skills and Abilities  

Must have proficiency in the use of various material handling devices like pallet jacks, hand-trucks, material lifts and so forth.

The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move 25 to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

Work Environment 

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and the varying ranges of Nebraska’s outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to extreme heat, or cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
