With higher yields and labor constraints, North American farmers should consider automation to help get the work done.
AGI Territory Sales Representative Jerry Leier says that since 1960 we have roughly the same amount of farmland but approximately half the farmers to work the land and we are nearing four times the bushels per acre in yield. Leier says that a permanent handling system can help address this challenge.
Labor savings are just one of the benefits of a permanent handling system. The reliable system is a hands-free efficient grain transfer with accessories like ladders or stairs and platforms that allow safe access for inspection and maintenance. In most systems no augers or conveyors are needed, increasing safety on the farm and reducing operational hours on tractors. A properly designed permanent handling system will save time and avoid bottlenecks that can slow down your harvest.
Pre-planning
Once you’ve decided to install a permanent handling system, Leier says there are a few things you should consider.
How will the grain be received and at what speed (BPH)? Will there be a dump or will other receiving methods be used? How will you fill a bucket elevator?
What will you do with the grain after it’s received? Are you going straight to a wet bin or to a dryer? Do you need the ability to bypass both of those and go straight into storage? How will you distribute the grain to your permanent and conditioned grain bins?
How will you remove the grain from the bins and at what speed (BPH)? Are you going direct into an auger or conveyor and into a truck? Will you reclaim it back to the bucket elevator? Will you need overhead truck load out(s)?
Plan for growth
As yields continue to increase, Leier recommends that you consider both current and future capacity needs. If you plan properly the system can be expanded as you grow your operation.
A lot of existing grain bins are not designed for the extra weight of conveyors as they can’t handle the extra peak loads. With the extra weight and snow load a roof may collapse in winter. Ask a qualified dealer to inspect your bins ahead of time.
