Stay safe around your augers this harvest

This harvest, protect yourself and your family with our five tips below.

1. Establish safe work zones

  • Other than the operator, there shouldn’t be anyone in the defined work zone
  • Children under 18 should not operate an auger

 

2. Shields and guards should always remain installed

  • Key shields are PTO shaft guards
  • Flighting should have intake screen
  • Regularly inspect all shields to ensure they are in good condition

 

3. Entanglements

  • To prevent entanglements, no loose or tattered clothing should be worn
  • Jewelry should not be worn while operating an auger
  • Missing or damaged PTO shields account for 70% of entanglements in PTO’s

 

4. Electrocutions

  • Ensure your operators always lower the grain augers to the horizontal or transport position before moving
  • Always take note of the location of all power lines at each work site
  • Keep at least 10 feet away from overhead electrical wires

 

5. Changing Behavior

  • Train employees to adequately recognize the degree of risk and choose behaviors that minimize potential injuries
